From May 2013, the General Dental Council (GDC) removed the need for patients to see a dentist prior to attending the dental hygienist. This allows patients to book directly with the dental hygienist, who will have arrangements in place to refer patients should they require treatment/advice that is out of their scope of work.

These new arrangements do not remove the need to see a dentist on a regular basis.
